The G2 team fully engaged with the attendees at this year's running of the Hedge Fund Tax 101 AND The K-1 Boot Camp for tax practitioners -- with G2 serving as co-sponsor, exhibitor, and panelist. George Michaels presented the taxation of securities transactions session along with Jay Freedman, KPMG. Following one of George's wash sale examples, he concluded, "You can't wash yourself," one of those statements where you had to be there to appreciate the context! Early in that same panel discussion, Jay highlighted the benefits of knowing your tax position, even pre-trade, in support of tax sensitive trading strategies. Overall, the networking value of the event once again was very strong. Read our blog about the event and check out photos of the G2 team in action....

06/15-17/2015 AdventConnect 2015
Wynn Resort, Las Vegas

Brian Roberti and James Kohli were "all in" at AdventConnect 2015.

With networking ranked as the prime benefit, G2 engaged and re-engaged with tons of people who live at the intersection of the investment management and fintech communities. While G2's booth in the Exhibit Hall served its purpose, this being Vegas, the best place for team building seemed to be the craps table. In the top spot for what was different at this year's AdventConnect: the main-tent, kick-off panel discussion designed to address questions about the pending acquisition of Advent by SS&C. Pretty interesting to see the founders of those 2 successful firms -- long-time competitors -- sharing the stage and talking about compelling reasons for the acquisition.

Next year's AdventConnect is already scheduled for San Diego. See you there!

04/01/14 Establishing a '40 Act Alternative Fund
The Princeton Club, NYC

G2 had the opportunity to audit an event this past week that took place at the Princeton club in New York, focusing on '40 Act funds. A blend between hedge fund strategies with the structure of a mutual fund, '40 Act funds represent a growing opportunity to tap into the liquid alternative space. It's a more recent trend that appears to be gaining traction with some of the biggest players in the financial industry. After attending this conference, we look forward to learning more in the upcoming months about how our business can also grow in the liquid alternatives space.

04/09/2015 14th Annual West Coast Open Your Heart to the Children Benefit
City View at Metreon, San Francisco

On a classically beautiful day in San Francisco, Brian Roberti attended this HFC event at CityView, in the Metreon site. In addition to a strong showing from the Hedge Fund community, the new coach of the San Francisco 49ers, his coaching staff, several players and members of the cheerleading squad were there to support this fund raiser. And while the food was good, the real stars on the refreshment side of things were the twenty California vintners offering tastes of their fine wine. All in all, a successful networking event for a highly worthwhile cause.

02/05/15 Hedge Funds Care / Help For Children (HFC): The Sneaker Ball
No. 8, NYC

James and Peter Kohli enjoyed yet another HFC event. The sneaker-wearing theme lent a fun, light air to this gathering, and was a nice change of pace for the sometimes stuffy financial crowd. There was even a giant (is that redundant?) Shaquille O'Neal signed sneaker (size 22) on display at the silent auction; Check out our FaceBook pix!

G2 is proud to support HFC and its mission to prevent and treat child abuse. We are already looking forward to March 5th and the Hedge Funds Care & Help For Children (HFC) 17th Annual NY Open Your Heart to the Children Benefit. Hope to see you there!

11/19-20/2013 Effective Hedge Fund Tax Practices
The Princeton Club, New York City

The G2 Team co-sponsored the annual Financial Research Associates (FRA) “Effective Hedge Fund Tax Practices” event. This highly focused event dove into all things tax, including Tax Analysis of Securities Transactions (TAST). The turn-out this year was terrific — even better than last year’s well attended version! The strong networking opportunity — with subject matter experts, clients and prospective clients — continues to command our attention and interest in full participation at future FRA events.

George Michaels spoke on the Wash Sales, Straddles, Short Sales, Constructive Sales and Other Potential Pitfalls panel. Read our blog about the event and check out conference pix!

Not only was it a strong turnout, it was terrific to see such a balanced representation of men and women at the event, in our view a positive leading indicator for the health & future of the industry.

San Francisco Marriott Marquis, San Francisco, CA

Once again, the G2 team reconnected with a wealth of clients, prospective clients, other sponsors/exhibitors and numerous members of the Advent team — more so than at any previous AdventConnect.

Advent’s product plans for the cloud are very relevant to G2’s clients and it was important to hear Advent acknowledge G2’s role as developer of the new German tax module.

Hats off to their very cool client appreciation dinner held inside San Francisco City Hall. Check out our FaceBook photos.
05/22-23/2013 RetailALTS — The 2nd Annual Advisor & Broker-Dealer’s Forum

05/01/13 Ernst & Young Eighth Annual Domestic Tax Conference
Marriott Marquis, NYC

Early on in the program, E&Y set the tone with this mantra, “Tax matters every day!” Attendees were encouraged to be “tax diplomats,” participating in the current, national conversation on tax. Firms were challenged to understand what their taxes paid for, i.e. the social contribution they made especially at the local community level. E&Y played back the results of their pre-event poll, noting among other things that the tax staff are increasingly talking with the most senior management in the firm, given the impact & elevated importance of taxes in a fast changing regulatory environment. IRS fun facts: despite IRS budget cuts, 40% of their $12B request for funds is for enforcement, with audits increasing. And who knew this year celebrates the 100th birthday of the U.S. Tax Return?! Finally, on a subject close to the center of G2’s software practice, Dan Tilkin and Brian Roberti heard that not having accurate cost basis information is a major cause of income tax restatements!!
04/18/13 Hedge Funds Care 12th Annual San Francisco Open Your Heart to the Children Benefit
The Bently Reserve - San Francisco, CA

On an incredibly brilliant weather day, as only San Francisco can produce, Brian Roberti attended this year’s lively Hedge Funds Care event on Battery Street. The filled room can be considered a positive health indicator for the industry as good as any. The San Francisco 49ers cheerleaders were back helping with the raffle, and the California vintners were pouring their outstanding red and white wines, while the center of gravity in the dessert room was the flowing fountain of chocolate! The business networking was excellent, with rewarding new connections made along with friendships renewed.

The most important constant was the presence of Kathryn Conroy, Executive Director of Hedge Funds Care, members of her team, as well as past and present members of their Board of Directors, all powerful reminders of the reason for this gathering — fund raising to battle and prevent child abuse.
04/09/13 NYC - Hedge Funds Care Cocktails & Commentary
The Current State of Outsourcing

Herrick, Feinstein, LLP - New York, NY

Brian Roberti was among the strong turnout at this HFC cocktails & networking event, hosted at Herrick, Feinstein’s very cool meeting facility at 2 Park Ave. Dr Kathryn Conroy’s kick-off reminded everyone that the monies raised help increase the predictability & consistency in children’s lives by strengthening child abuse prevention & treatment programs.

The evening’s business dialog focused on how outsourcing can benefit fund managers, with the #1 desired outcome being they get to focus more on managing the fund’s investments. Operational due diligence was discussed at length, with the assertion that demonstrable “ODD” has become a prerequisite to investor funding. The panelists did a good job highlighting the critical role that technology plays in enabling ODD and assuring investors through increased transparency and reporting.
03/07/13 Hedge Funds Care 15th Annual New York Open Your Heart to the Children Benefit Cipriani - New York, NY

This impressive annual fund-raiser again proved to be an excellent forum for connecting with hedge fund industry leaders, with the funds and service providers equally well-represented. At once, old relationships were rekindled while new ones forged. Brian Roberti remarked that amidst the throng of people and the backdrop of animated conversation and music playing, perhaps the strongest statement was being made quietly in one corner of the cavernous hall: there stood an exhibit of paintings, crafted by a number of children whose lives were being touched by Hedge Funds Care grants, serving as a reminder and a thing of beauty.
01/31/13 NYC - Hedge Funds Care Cocktails & Commentary
Hedge Fund Outlook 2013: Perspectives for the Buyer & Seller

The Pierre Hotel - New York, NY

G2’s Brian Roberti once again found the brief but powerful opening remarks of Executive Director & CEO of Hedge Funds Care (HFC), Dr. Kathryn Conroy, to resonate: with the message that the monies contributed by members of the hedge fund community for events like this one go towards effectively reducing the uncertainty in an abused child’s life — by funding HFC’s good works to help prevent & treat child abuse. Mr. Roberti also found the expert panel from Schulte Roth & Zabel LLP and Grant Thornton LLP to be ready and articulate educators on the topic of Hedge Fund M&A — those two firms co-sponsored the event, which closed with a lively cocktail & networking hour at the Pierre Hotel, where it turns out HFC had it’s very first NYC dinner / fund raiser 15 years ago!
01/23-24/2013 Hedge Fund Tax 101 and The K-1 Boot Camp
The Princeton Club, New York City

George Michaels introduced TAST (Tax Analysis of Securities Transactions) as a panelist on the topical session that followed lunch on the 23rd. He asserted the TAST acronym was far better than one constructed from the session title: Taxation of Investment Transactions and Financial Instruments: Part 1. George proceeded with aplomb to help lead a lively discussion about Wash Sales, Constructive Sales and more with his co-panelists from Chilton Investment Company and Ernst & Young LLP.

The G2 Team enjoyed serving as co-sponsor of this event and having the opportunity to meet many Hedge Fund tax practitioners from across the country.
11/14-15/2012 14th Annual Conference on Effective Hedge Fund Tax Practices
The Princeton Club, New York City

George Michaels spoke about Working Through the Intricacies of Cost-Basis Reporting Rules. Given the constant influx of regulations and increased surveillance on the part of the IRS, this conference was very worthwhile. We enjoyed seeing some of our clients and re-connecting with colleagues.

G2’s Brian Roberti enjoyed attending this HFC event and was impressed by the Executive Director and CEO of HFC, Dr. Kathryn Conroy’s opening remarks on the pervasiveness of child abuse and HFC’s good works to help prevent & treat child abuse. Mr. Roberti also found the panel of hedge fund industry experts addressing the topic Under Pressure: Fees, Liquidity and Beyond, which was sponsored by Rothstein Kass, knowledgeable and insightful.
04/19/12 11th Annual San Francisco Open Your Heart to the Children Benefit
