G2 FinTech Announces Webinar on Tax Analysis of Securities Transactions
First in a series of CPE-eligible webinars to offer tax practitioners and financial
managers practical guidance on reducing risk of non-compliance
New York, February 18, 2014 — G2 FinTech, provider of tax analysis and compliance software for the investment management community, today announced its inaugural webinar, Wash Sales, Constructive Sales & Straddles: A Primer, which will be held on Thursday, March 13th at 1:00 pm EST. The webinar is the first in a series of CPE-eligible webinars designed to provide investment funds and investment fund service providers with up-to-date information and guidelines on how to accurately perform tax analyses of securities transactions (TAST), a complex and costly part of accurately generating book to tax adjustments. Tailored for tax managers, fund accountants, controllers, CFOs, compliance officers and auditors, these live, interactive webinars are complimentary and offer participants the chance to earn Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credit*.
Led by G2 FinTech CEO and Founder George Michaels, an authority on tax analysis of securities transactions, Wash Sales, Constructive Sales & Straddles: A Primer, will provide an overview of these taxable events and describe how they affect realized gains and losses. At the conclusion of this webinar, attendees will be able to:
To register for the webinar or for more details, visit: http://www.g2ft.com/webinars/TASTPrimer.html
- define the various taxable events
- understand chaining and branching
- apply the critical concept of “substantially identical securities” to wash sales and
- identify which specific short sales trigger constructive sales, and
- interweave cost basis adjustments across different rules in the tax code
Michaels continues “With the industry regulatory bodies increasingly focused on examining Hedge Funds and enforcing compliance, it is critical that tax analysis results are correct. To offer more guidance on this highly complex topic, G2 FinTech actively participates in a number of training venues, notably the recurring tax seminars held each year by Financial Research Associates** (FRA). In addition, as part of our TAST Resource section, we’ve published over a dozen white papers about tax accounting for securities transactions. Yet we strongly felt that there was room for the delivery of a webinar-based training vehicle to strengthen best practices. The pain level associated with running afoul of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC) is only on the rise.”
G2 FinTech expects attendees from investment fund entities themselves as well as providers of outsourced administration services to investment funds, including fund administrators who service both mutual funds and hedge funds.
“There are two primary reasons we expect this kind of attendance,” explained G2 FinTech Managing Director Brian Roberti. “First, fund admins increasingly recognize that tax services can be a valuable additive offering for their fund clients. Secondly, trading strategies that utilize short sales, leverage and complex derivative instruments – previously the sole domain of hedge funds – have become more prevalent within the retail investment community, through the distribution of mutual funds that offer these as so-called liquid alternative investments. As a result, this has prompted full-service oriented mutual fund admins to step up their tax analysis game, akin to their hedge fund admin brethren. Why? – the growth in trading of these liquid alternatives increases the likelihood of triggering the aforementioned taxable events.”
*G2 FinTech is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a sponsor of continuing professional education on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors.
**G2 FinTech is next co-sponsoring and speaking at the 5th Annual Private Investment Fund Tax Master Class, a two-day event run by Financial Research Associates, May 21-22 at the Princeton Club, NYC.
G2 FinTech provides European compliance add-on modules and financial services data warehouse software to the investment management community.
